How To Get More Men into Your Church Service…the Easy Way

bethechurch“Whatever Works!”

That is the take many younger pastors have on Paul’s “I have become all things to all men…” mission strategy.   Now, we take it to the next level.

It is always a challenge to get men to attend church.  They just don’t want to come.  They see it as a complete waste of their precious time.  Yet, somehow we must reach them. I absolutely believe THAT!  But how to do it?  Perhaps a little creativity is in order.  So, if you don’t mind thinking waaaaay outside the box, or care about church history or any parameters the Scriptures might lay out, try these pragmatic suggestions.  Several studies suggest that this new approach will pack the house.

#1  Hold Your Service on Friday or Saturday Night.  We have stuff to do in the morning, like sleep!  But we also have  golfing, yard work, 4 wheeling, skiing, fishing, and any number of important things we want to do.  If you want to reach men, you have to accommodate their schedule!  Our days are packed, but our nights are generally free.

#2  Have an Open Bar with Free Hot Wings!  Free beer and shots will be appreciated and will definitely get people to come.  No other church in your town does this.  This will also help loosen everyone up for the evenings “worship arts”.  If you are in Colorado or Washington, you may also consider offering free pot brownies.  Why not? It is legal now, and someone in the church  can hook you up with the best sources.  Free Hot Wings in multiple flavors is a nice touch and will be appreciated by the guys.

#3  Make Sure the Worship Team includes Attractive Scantily Clad Women.  Emphasis on attractive and scantily.  A recent study by the Barny Group concludes that some men like this a lot, and will come just for the show!  It is OK if they can’t sing, just turn their microphones off.  It isn’t the voice that the men will be interested in, so it doesn’t matter.

#4 Don’t Preach or share anything from the Bible!  Nobody will care what you have to say anyway.  However they might be offended by any reference to Jesus Christ.  You need to avoid offending them if you want to keep the “house” packed each week.  This is important.  You may also want to cover the cross in the sanctuary, if by some unbelievable coincidence it hasn’t already been removed and put in storage.  It is also advisable to remove any scripture references from the sanctuary as well as anything that could be construed as religious:  pulpits, alters, communion tables, literature displays, or BIBLES.  Stained glass should be covered.

#5  Have Scantily Clad Cocktail Waitresses and Greeters.  Research shows that men are much more likely to congregate where there is free alcohol and barely dressed women.  With both of these angles covered, you should pack the house.

#6  Prepare The Faithful for the New Service Launch: It is likely that the current church members may not understand or even agree with your vision for this new service.  You’re the pastor, so it is your job to convince them that this is God’s will for the church.  If the Sunday morning faithful objects to this, preach a sermon series on the need to contextualize the gospel.  Preach it over and over again until they either give up and leave or accept this as God’s vision for the church they built before you were even born.  Be nice about it.  You don’t want too many of them to leave, because you need their money to pay for the new outreach service

#7 Have the Worship Arts Team Play Country and Classic Rock Top 40: It is OK to mix in other genres, but these genres are safe and most of the guys will like it. You will need to look over the play list each week to make sure there are no references to God, Jesus or the Man upstairs in the country stuff.   Talk to your worship leader about this.  He’s probably already doing this to a lesser extent for the Sunday morning alcohol free service, so it shouldn’t be too hard to manage.  Still, it may require supervision.  Most importantly, make sure the guitar players are really good and the sound is huge!  Get those subwoofers pumping, nobody in this crowd is going to tell you it’s too loud.

#8 Finally, Offer a Free Shuttle Service To and From the Service. By the end of the service, many of the guys will have had too much to drink and may not be able to drive.  The last thing you want is for one of them to get in an accident and hurt or kill themselves or others.  That is REALLY bad PR.  To reduce this as much as possible, offer a free shuttle service to and from the “service”.  It would be best to keep with the nights theme and only allow attractive scantily clad women to be the drivers.  But this may not be possible in all circumstances and flexibility on your part is crucial.

If you don’t mind stretching things a bit and holding the Scriptures even looser than you may already, this approach can be very effective in getting men to come to church.  Discipleship will be caught, rather than taught.  The men will learn that church can be VERY exciting, and that Christians aren’t so bad after all.  It will put an end to the often correct charge that “they just want my money” because you won’t take any offerings.   Instead, you are giving back to the community, providing a safe place for men to congregate and be men.

Paul became all things to all people.  Shouldn’t you too?

  1. Wow Jim, you covered almost everything but from a woman’s view point you could add pictures of their wives as dart targets for those who have separated, divorced or just don’t get on with them and as an added bonus this will help flex their muscles, you want them looking and feeling good for the attractive scantily clad Women don’t you, perhaps also free tickets to the local Jim and Sauna as a door prize or as a raffle.

Wow if Ron goes that will give me more time to watch the Soaps on T.V, which reminds me, shouldn’t you have a few TV’s in the Church so the men don’t get homesick.

Wow you are indeed going to pack them in!

Have a good one – Annie.

    • Hi Annie,

Those are good suggestions, but because we want to remain biblical in our approach, we have to draw the line at promoting violence against women. This is something Jesus would never do! 🙂

      • OK Jim I agree, yes there is always room for improvement, so what about putting some rubber stoppers on the ends of the Darts ? OK it was just a suggestion, don’t send me to spam!

I’m pleased you like the name Disco Church but I wasn’t joking, believe me that is just what it was like, even the overhead flashed on and off and yes while we were trying to read the words.

Thanks Jim for sharing your great sense of humor, God gave us the gift of Laughter and it is good for fun or to teach important Truths.

        Well done!

        • Believe me, I know all about Disco Church! I’ve been to a few. I know it might seem impossible to believe, if you have read any of our posts here, but I am a full time musician. I travel throughout the Midwest and perform 50-60 events each year. I don’t mind all the lights and loud music when I’m on stage playing secular music. I just don’t believe a church service is the best place for it.

Now the only thing missing from the Disco church s the alcohol and the scantily clad worship team girls! Now, if they combined Disco Church with the new Men’s service we’ve suggested, they just might start a revival!

  2. Thanks Jim for the new style of services we should be seeing soon , you`ll know where they are by the utes , motorbikes , twincabs, mustangs parked outside. Oh, you`ll see mine there easily enough, it`s the one parked on the very front park, didn’t want to take the chance it`ll be booked out and you really don’t want to walk to far after services. Thanks, all my mates are carpooling!

  3. We can joke Jim but we only have to look at worshiping God today and we can see even with music there is cause for concern.

I went to one of the Disco churches, sorry but that is how I felt, flashing lights, beating drums, jumping and shouting, young woman, yes in low cut and very short mini skirts, dancing and singing on stage, with long haired, jean clad swinging young men performing almost aerobics with their impressive instruments, swinging them high and low and around.

I sat feeling lost in lar lar land, but the young were rejoicing or so it seemed, some were on their mobiles, some were walking in and out, some were taking to each other, yes there were others my age and they looked just as lost, there were no times of deep worship or times of reverence.

Yes I do sometimes raise my hands and even cry with Joy when I sing. I have been known to dance too but I haven’t lost it, just a sway back and forth but at one Church I was told I was not allowed to raise my hands and also that it was not necessary to talk about Jesus, it just made others feel uncomfortable, so is that a joke no that is what they said.

I noticed in some Churches they had very few young people and in some very few elderly, in the Church I was going to, the elderly had mostly left when the new Minister had deleted all the hymns, I asked a few how they felt and they said not wanted, they also had not been visited. I shared this with the Minister, he said they were just being selfish and had to get with it!

    What does God say…..

He has set down guidelines for us to follow as we sing so that we can Worship in Unity, it does indeed cover all age groups, there is a balance.

We all remember songs that touched our heart and love the new ones that do this too. As I watch the Joy on the faces of the Elderly as they sing their much Loved Hymns and when I sing the songs I first sang in Unity in the Church (Scripture in song ) I’m flooded with wonderful memories and yes as I watch the younger people sing their songs with great expression and happiness, I rejoice and feel thankfulness as I see God’s wisdom in giving these guidelines but we always remember it is about Him not us.

    Ephesians 5:18-20 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

Colossians 3:15-17 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.

Christian Love from both of us – Anne.

Disco Church! I love that and I am going to use that from now on! The most troubling part of this for me, is that many of the younger pastors, fresh out of seminary, have embraced this concept hook, line and sinker. We are going to be seeing more and more of it, until the American protestant evangelical church burns the house to the ground. From there, the remnant will have to rebuild.

I was a young Christian when the battle over drums in church was being waged. At the time, I thought to myself “What is the big deal? Led Zeppelin has drums and I LOVE drums, so of course we should have them in church!” It was a no-brainer for me. But the older, wiser and more mature pastors, whom we are called to respect in scripture, were told to shut up, get with the program and get the heck out of the way.

To those men who fought that battle and lost, I say “Thank You for trying!”

We should have listened to them. Today, we are harvesting the fruit of that planting season! Now “worship” is a disco in many churches, and few people are able to have the courage to stand up and say “Our Worship Leader Has No Clothes!

  4. Surprise, Ron’s comment came back, I had this problem before, sorry Jim it frustrates me too, games people play or unstable Technology.

It reminded me though, what ever else you do in your new style Church, make sure your state of the Arts sound system is turned up real high so people can’t think straight or you may get someone who understands God’s Truth and stands up against your upbeat new style church! and that would never do, we want mindless sheep don’t we who follow blindly, not those who can hear Jesus’ voice clearly and speaks out for it.

    Blessings – Anne
