The Most Meaningful Christmas Gift Ever Given to Me

I received it 26 years ago. I know that because the inscription from my non-Christian sister who gave it to me is dated “Christmas 1985.” Though I have over 20 other bibles of various versions sitting in my study, this Bible is my most cherished friend. It has spoken into every area of my life, through every season of that life: being single, getting married, raising a family, pastoring, sermon preparation, tragedy and heartache; victories and failures. It was the Bible I read from at the high school graduation of both my kids.  Every morning it sits on my desk, waiting for me. Someday, when my days on earth wind to a close, it will be the Bible used at my funeral.

We’ve been through a lot together. I went to Bible College with it.  Professor Middlebrook’s notes from I Peter and I John are still Read the rest of this entry

What Does God Want From the Human Race?

What Does God Want From the Human Race?

Does He want us to believe the right things or act the right way?  Is His primary concern that we believe the right doctrine or that we behave the right way?  Does He want us to hold to and defend until death the “correct” teaching about Him?    Or is God more concerned with how we choose to live our lives?

Does it please God more when we give ourselves to study every facet of his character, diving into the deep end of the pool to contemplate God in all his glorious ways or when we devote our lives to living according to those ways?  Put another way, do you think that God was more pleased with John Calvin Read the rest of this entry

Iranian Pastor Faces Execution for Refusing to Recant Christian Faith

An Iranian pastor who has refused to renounce his Christian faith faces execution as early as Wednesday
after his sentence was upheld by an Iranian court.

Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani, who maintains he has never
been a Muslim as an adult, has Islamic ancestry and therefore must recant his
faith in Jesus Christ, the 11th branch of Iran’s Gilan Provincial Court ruled.
Iran’s Supreme Court had ordered the trial court to determine whether Nadarkhani had been a
Muslim prior to converting to Christianity.  Read

Sometimes, You Just Need to add Ice and All Your Problems Vanish!

A friend of mine posted this photo of his dog on facebook, and I immediately connected with it!  As it keeps getting hotter and hotter, this old boy seems to have the right answer!  Look closely, I think he is sleeping!

I haven’t had time to write lately as I have been moving my family across the country! It is a lot of work, and it is quite time consuming. I should be back wrinting in August.

Saturday Morning Funnies: Peter’s Initial reaction to the Gospel of Luke

“Dad, you were right……” Happy Father’s Day!

“By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.” Charles Wadsworth.

Why didn’t they tell us THAT in parenting class!

Would They Have Killed Jesus if HE Preached the Same Message the Church Preaches Today?

“If Jesus had preached the same message that ministers preach today, He would never have been crucified.” Leonard Ravenhill

I actually think Ravenhill’s  very pointed  observation is accurate.  What do you think?  If Jesus had taught how to be wealthy, how to be succesful, how to have your best life NOW or any number of things that we are taught today, instead of what he did teach, would they have crucified Him?

As we think about this question it is important to remember that The Cross was God’s idea.  It was His plan.  The truth is that no one took Jesus life, he laid it down.  Still, would they have wanted to crucify him had he preached the same message we hear today? Read the rest of this entry

Whatever Happened to the Message of The Cross?

The sign said, “Now serving Starbucks coffee!” It was the late 90’s and the premium coffee craze was taking the country by storm. Everyone who liked coffee LOVED Starbucks or soon would. So it wasn’t surprising that some business would be utilizing the brand name to promote what they were doing. It made pretty good sense. It wouldn’t have fazed me at all if any other company was doing it. But this massive sign was hung in front of a local evangelical Christian church. The message was crystal clear: “Come to our service on Sunday, we have free Starbucks coffee!”
