How Does One Truly Worship God? An Early Church Father’s View
From my view in the cheap seats, it seems that what it means to worship God has become open to interpretation.
Can I worship God any way I want to?
On a corporate level, does church leadership have biblical authority to design a worship service anyway they think is best?
Judging by state of the American Evangelical church, I think most leaders believe the answer is Yes to both questions. And boy do we ever take this permission seriously!

“Teach Us How to…Live”, An Early Church Fathers Take on “The Lord’s Prayer III
“Lord, teach us to pray…”
You would have reacted the same way, I suppose. The disciples had seen Jesus do incredible miracles. They also watched him pray a lot. They put two and two together and surmised that Jesus’ power was a result of his prayer. Now, every first century Jew knew how to pray. But nobody could do the miracles that Jesus was doing. The disciples wanted to know how to do that!
So they asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. That inquiry resulted in what we call “The Lord’s Prayer.” A short lesson on how to pray that the church has held dear ever since.
But is it a lesson on how one should pray?
“Yes, but”, is how I think I would answer that.

A Bible Every Christian Should Own: The Orthodox Study Bible
The $5,000.00 worth of bible study and reference books on my library shelf gives my condition away to most people. But since you can’t see them, let me state the problem: I love Bible reference books! Recently, I added a not-so-well-known study bible to my collection that I think every follower of Christ would benefit from having: The Orthodox Study Bible.
Here’s Why I Like It:
The Study Notes are taken from the Church Fathers of the early church.
If your library is similar to mine, most of your books have The Reformation as a central reference point. Believe it or not, there is 1500 years of church history prior to this. Most of our study bibles and reference works do not take much of that history into account. I find it incredibly enriching to read a passage of scripture and see how the Fathers understood the passage. This book allows me to do that without going to another book. That is great! The Orthodox Study Bible accomplishes this by giving specific attention to the biblical interpretation of the fathers of the ancient and undivided Church, and to the consensus of the Seven ecumenical or Church-wide Councils of Christendom, held from the 4th to the 8th centuries. This alone makes the book well worth the $30-40 you will spend on it.
The Notes and Commentary Emphasise the Major Themes of the Faith.
The Trinity, The Incarnation, the Church, and God’s call to His people to live righteous and holy lives in Christ. It sticks to these key areas and what it does, it does well.
The Old Testament is based on the Septuagint.
This is the only Old Testament I own that is! I am a big advocate of reading the Bible in different translations because of the clarity it brings. I have been rewarded by the time I have spent reading out of this one. I think you will be too. It does have the books that the Protestant Church rejects. I am actually glad it does. The early church accepted them as scripture, The Catholic and Orthodox churches continue to accept them. We reject them, primarily because Martin Luther decided to eliminate them. I know the arguments for this, but I still think they are worth reading. This is the only Bible I own that also has the Apocrypha in it. The New Testament is the New King James.
It Includes Rich Devotional Material.
I don’t come from a liturgical background and so I am unfamiliar with many of its aspects. Over the years, I have grown to appreciate it more. This book includes the Orthodox Lectionary, morning and evening prayers and a host of devotional material. Again, I have been enriched utilizing them
The Orthodox Study Bible is unique, there is no other Bible like this in existence. It is historical, helping modern followers of Christ connect with our brothers and sisters of the ancient past. On top of all this, the Bible is very, very well done. For these and other reasons, this is a great book to add to your library. It is well worth the money. If you are hesitant, do what I did: check it out from your local library for free. I was sold from the moment I held it in my hand!
Is the “Worship” Centered Church Model Bankrupting Christianity?
Bankrupt. Destitute. Impoverished. Insolvent. Whichever word you choose, they all carry the same basic idea: They describe the inability to meet one’s obligations. These words are used to describe people that have been reduced to a state of financial ruin. We also use the term to depict an individual or organization that is completely lacking in a particularly desirous quality or attribute. One might be morally bankrupt or spiritually impoverished. You get the idea.
While sitting in a church service the other day, I came to a conclusion about the church at large, which has serious ramifications for my life. It was a long time in coming. I am not sure why it happened that day, but I can’t ignore that it did. This conclusion was fueled, in large part, by my own journey through the church world: I have been a senior pastor, a worship pastor, an associate pastor, a volunteer, and a normal guy in the pew who isn’t doing anything. Over the last three years I have “worshipped” in close to 30 different congregations with varying denominational or non-denominational affiliations. Cross-Centered Worship Songs: “You Are the Way”
This column, “Cross-Centered Worship Songs”, was started as a way to serve the church at large. I wanted to introduce some of the lesser known songs out there so that the corporate singing of the church might be enriched. This is THE ONE Bible Every Christian Should Own…!
“SELL YOUR BED AND BUY BOOKS!”
That’s what my Homiletic’s professor declared to the whole class. Another student had asked what we should do if we wanted to be good pastors. “Get books, big books, thick books, good books, lots of books and read them. Sell your bed if you have to, but get books and read!” Much to the chagrin of my young bride, I bought that one hook, line and sinker. His admonition helped to forever alter the course of my money. My freshmen year in college I bought over $700 worth of Biblical reference works (back in the mid 80’s!) that I was not required to have for class! I didn’t sell the bed (though I would have definitely traded it for Kittel), but I did eat a lot of popcorn for breakfast. So began my love affair with books.
It would be my Greek teacher who would have the most profound impact on me. It happened when he uttered this statment on the first day of class:

Free Prayer: Urgent Prayer Request

We now have a subpoena from the police department to locate it. Please pray that the Holy Spirit will direct, lead and guide us to locate this file. If it is not found I will be fired because I do the filing. If I lose this job I will lose everything, the company will be sanctioned and the ramifications will be so severe I could land up in jail or worse. Pray This 400 Year Old Prayer: “May I Live My Life To Honor You”
The following prayer was first offered back in the 1600′s. It is from the largely forgotten deposit of the Puritan Movement of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These people knew God and they certainly knew how to pray. We can learn a lot from them. They are written in old english. 400 Year Old Prayer: “May I Live a Life Worthy of You”
The following prayer is from the largely forgotten deposit of the Puritan Movement of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It testifies to the richness and color of evangelical thought and language, as well as their devotion to the Savior. This prayer and others can be found in a book titled “The Valley of Vision”, by Arthur Bennet. I have included them in this blog so that others can use them in their own prayer life as a springboard to a more faithful walk with Jesus. These prayers are 300-400 years old! They were written in old English,but that should not get in the way if you don’t let it.
Need of Jesus
Lord Jesus,
I am blind, be my light,
ignorant, be my wisdom,
self-willed, be my mind
Open my ear to grasp quickly your Spirit’s voice,
and delightfully run after His beckoning hand;
Melt my conscience that no hardness remain,

Get Your Free New Testament on Mp3! (Yes, Free!)
In my search for an audio copy of the New Testament, I stumbled across the “Faith Comes By Hearing” website. I was familiar with their ministry, having taken our church through their very edifying listening program a few years back. I was stunned to find out that they give away, completely free of charge, the Bible in Mp3 format. I downloaded the ESV version and I must say, I am completely thrilled. I just listened to 1 John while I was driving.

John MacArthur: “To Be A Christian Is To Be A Slave of Christ”
What is a Christian? What does it mean to be one? How should Christians order their lives? What priorities should captivate and compel those who call themselves Christians? In our day, it seems many who call themselves Christians are confused about this. Several months ago, I embarked on a study of the descriptive terms used in the Bible to describe Christians. I hypothesized, that understanding those terms, would shed much light on what it means to follow the Savior. I was right. It was a very nourishing exercise.
Would it surprise you to learn that the word “Christian” is one of the least used terms in the Bible to describe those who follow Christ? It occurs only three times. The two most common terms used to describe followers of Christ are: Disciple and Slave/Servant.
In his new book, “Slave: The Hidden Truth About Your identity In Christ”, Dr. John MacArthur focuses on the term “slave.” I was hooked by the end of the first page. Here are some great quotes from the book:

Would They Have Killed Jesus if HE Preached the Same Message the Church Preaches Today?
“If Jesus had preached the same message that ministers preach today, He would never have been crucified.” Leonard Ravenhill
I actually think Ravenhill’s very pointed observation is accurate. What do you think? If Jesus had taught how to be wealthy, how to be succesful, how to have your best life NOW or any number of things that we are taught today, instead of what he did teach, would they have crucified Him?
As we think about this question it is important to remember that The Cross was God’s idea. It was His plan. The truth is that no one took Jesus life, he laid it down. Still, would they have wanted to crucify him had he preached the same message we hear today? Read the rest of this entry
Will The Non-Conformists Please Rise Up?
In his book The Mindchangers, Em Griffin describes an experiment with groups of 12 people. They were brought into a room where four lines of unequal length were displayed. They had to decide which two were the same length and publicly vote for their choice. Person after person after person (11 in all) voted for the wrong line–because they had all been told to ahead of time. The one individual who was in the dark couldn’t imagine how in the world all these seemingly normal people could all choose the wrong line. When it was his turn to vote, he had to decide, “Do I go with what I know my senses are telling me, or do I go with the crowd?” One third of those tested caved in to group pressure and changed their vote to agree with their peers.
